Antonio Salieri, a prolific composer admired in his time, is largely forgotten today.  Few books have been written about him.

Abstemious, devout and philanthropic, he helped needy musicians and encouraged young composers.  He was respected, honoured and decorated.  Beethoven and Schubert were proud to call themselves his pupils.  No scandal ever attached  to his name .....except the poison rumour.  Was he responsible for the death of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart?

Peter Shaffer, in this superb award-winning play, takes this dubious rumour as a starting point and develops it into a stunning theatrical exploration of the effect a genius had on lesser mortals.
